THE LEADING SHIPPING EVENT

Sea Focus 2010 - Intelligent Shipping
30.9.2010 Hanasaari

The first decade of the millennium stressed the significance of the challenges facing the current industrial society.

This decade began and ended in financial crisis, in fact some of the most serious ones in the last hundred years. The recessions revealed the need for structural changes in modern society and our economy and triggered, amongst other things, significant changes in the structures of production. New structures not only altered the flow of goods geographically, but also set new quality standards for supply chains, that logistics service providers, transportation equipment manufacturers and IT-solution developers have to live up to.

Economic changes are reflected in many different ways. Ever increasing efficiency is required in transportation and the entire supply chain. Thus new requirements on technical, information technology and operational abilities of operators in the sector are demanded. This can be seen in the development of new equipment and management solutions within logistics. On the other hand the long-term positive economic development creates new opportunities for example in passenger and cruise traffic, but also new challenges with increasingly demanding customers, and governmental bodies supervising the environment.

Environmental issues began to get their due attention in the first years of the 2000s. For logistics, this has meant and means new demands on technological solutions, which in part make the mentioned economic challenges even greater. Fortunately, many operators now grasp the seriousness of the situation and direct necessary resources to build harmony between logistics and the environment.

Our theme "Intelligent Shipping" highlights the solutions that industry leaders, both on land and at sea, and within logistics and technology have created to ensure future competitiveness in the above-mentioned demanding business environment. We believe our seminar, through the examples of several leading firms, will provide good ideas to experts both in industry and the service sector.
