is widely recognised as commanding enormous respect throughout the maritime and logistics sectors internationally for her work in executive education, research in identifying future challenges for industry, and building global relationships. She has high-level contacts in many of the leading organisations in her field, including excellent professional relationships in Europe, in Asia including China, and in Latin America
Her colleagues in many countries know her as a totally dedicated, tenacious worker with deep attention to detail, and innovative in tackling any challenge or problem that comes her way.
Currently, she is Director of the Executive MBA in Shipping and Logistics (The Blue MBA) at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Europe’s leading institution of its kind. From the beginning, she has been responsible for the design, development and co-ordination of The Blue MBA. On behalf of CBS, she has a fundamental role in building global relationships and networks within the maritime industry. She also promotes research identifying challenges and future issues for the maritime industry as a whole. She is a member of many international boards and committees. Based on her extensive international network and experience, she has been entrusted with major roles in varied maritime-related activities, and speaks at leading maritime events.
From 2005 to 2009 Irene was Director of the DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) programme. In 2009 the DBA programme was merged with the other PhD programmes at CBS.
In 2009 a survey showed that she was amongst the 20 most influential women in the shipping industry in Denmark. She is involved in several maritime-related research undertakings and research-based conferences where she draws on expertise from her wide maritime connections, both in terms of academic and industry input. As just one example of the esteem in which she is held, in 2010 she was appointed a judge for the Lloyd’s List Global Awards, a premier industry event. Most recently she was appointed the lead partner for the newly initiated project for enhancing the management skills of the Danish Maritime Cluster as well as the member of the Steering Board of the CBS Maritime.
Attracting many from the cream of the new generation management in shipping and logistics and associated services such as law, the Blue MBA under her guidance has been praised by shipping leaders as a key driver for the modernization of the maritime sector – the lynchpin of global trade. This was strongly underlined in early 2012, when the programme won the prestigious Danish Maritime Prize for 2011, presented at a memorable ceremony in Copenhagen.
Since 2013 she has been an evaluator for the Association of MBAs (AMBA), which is described as representing “the highest standard of achievement in postgraduate business education.”
In 2014 joined the Board of Advisors for the Panama Maritime XII World Conference & Exhibition. Top level speakers scheduled for the conference included Koji Sekimizu, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, and His Excellency Juan Carlos Varela Rodriguez, President of the Republic of Panama.
She is also responsible for the design and delivery of all the Executive Short Development Courses for the shipping industry, delivered by the CBS Executive. In 2014 CBS Executive appointed her the Scientific Director of the European Short Sea Shipping Conference which was held in Copenhagen 18-19 June 2015.
