Port of Kalajoki, independent and free trade port, joins the IntelligenceHunt6


Kalajoki is located on the shore of the Gulf of Bothnia in the Northern Ostrobothnia of Finland. The Port of Kalajoki in Rahja serves as a transport node between truck and ship traffic. The Port of Kalajoki’s location by the deep open sea is very advantageous in terms of the maintenance of the entrance channel.


The overall traffic of the Port of Kalajoki is approximately 620 000 tonnes and there are about 180 vessels visiting the port annually.


60% of the traffic from the Port of Kalajoki is export. Sawn timber is the main export product of the port and every year 500,000 m3 is shipped from Kalajoki. Imports make up  40% of the overall traffic.


Expert in Exporting Wood Products

The port has 60 sawmill companies as its clients and 10 – 20 other industrial companies from Northern-, Eastern- and Mid Finland. Sawn timber products are mainly exported to England, Spain and Mediterranean countries. In addition to sawn timber products plywood, steel components, scrap iron, milled white peat, grain and wood pellets are exported.

Nowadays also container feeder visit Kalajoki every other week. This gives good opportunities to the saw mills to serve their customers all around the world.  Within a very close distance with the Port there are business’s involved in recycling as well as the manufacturing of steel components.


Bulk Goods for Import

Raw minerals used in the pulp- and paper industry, slag, tile industry minerals and different types of botanical material used in the feed industry are imported through the Port of Kalajoki. The importing of bulk goods has been made easier for the port warehouses have been built especially for this purpose.


The Port of Kalajoki can export even small amounts of goods for global markets efficiently. This is achieved by integrated shipments of several companies and the goods for export are collected straight from the sawmill or factory. Oy Blomberg Stevedoring Ab and Rahja Stevedoring (Rahjan Huolinta), forwarding company, are the port operators for Kalajoki.

The Port of Kalajoki is currently employing 80 people of which 55 are working for Rahja Stevedoring -forwarding company.
